Iran's General Qasem Soleimani

Who was Qasem Soleimani?


  • Qasem Soleimani was an Iranian Major General in Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and from 1998 until his death commander of its Quds Force, a division of extraterritorial military and clandestine operations. He was born on 11 March 1957 and died on 3 January 2020. His hometown was in Kerman in southeastern Iran.

  • Soleimani's father was a farmer and mother "Fatemeh" died in 2013. He has five siblings, five sisters, and one brother, Sohrab who worked and lived with Soleimani in their young days and now he is a warden and Director General of Tehran Prisons Organisation. The U.S imposed sanctions on Sohrab for his roll in abuses in an Iranian Prisons Soleimani practiced karate and was a fitness trainer in his youth. He has four children, two sons, and two daughters.

Rise of Soleimani


  • His military career started with the Iran-Iraq war during the 1980s eventually commanding the 41st Division and later involved in extraterritorial operations, assisting  Hezbollah in Lebanon in 2012. He helped bolster the Bashar al-Assad government in Syria. He was also a commander of the combined Iraqi government and commander of Shia military forces. He was the first to support Kurdish forces, providing them with military equipment. He maintained a low profile during most of the carriers.

  • Soleimani was a hero for Iranian because he was viewed as a person who was fighting selflessly with Iran's enemy, and his status approach as a National Icon. He played the most important roll in Iran's fight against ISIS in Iraq. He is considered as the "linchpin" who brought together Kurdish and Shia Forces to fight against ISIS. During the Syrian civil war he was a strong supporter of the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad.

Sanctions 

  • Soleimani was included in the list of Iranian individuals targeted with sanctions in United Nations Security Council Resolution 1747 on 18 May 2011. He was sanctioned again by the U.S. along with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and other senior Syrian officials due to his alleged involvement in providing material support to the Syrian government. He was included by the U.S in 2007 a "Designation of Iranian Entities and Individuals for Proliferation Activities and Support for Terrorism" which forbade U.S citizens from doing business with him.

Assassinated

  • Soleimani was killed by an American predator drone   (AGM-114 Hellfire (NINJA) air-to-surface missile) when his convoy was near Baghdad International Airport on 3 January 2020 on local time around 1:00 a.m (22:00 UTC on 2 January).

Reason behind Assassination


  • Regarding the decision to kill Soleimani, the Pentagon focused on both his past actions and a deterrent to his future action. The strike has followed the attack on the American Embassy on Bagdad by the support of the Iraqi Shia militant and the 2019 K-1 Airbase attack.

  • The official of The New York Times told that Trump had initially decided to attack Shia militants but chosen the most extreme option proposed. The U.S defense department said the strike was carried in the direction of the President.
